Asim Kumar Halder is an Assistant Professor at Xiangnan University and a recognized scholar in Sports Humanities and Social Sciences, physical culture, and sports anthropology. His scholarship operates at the intersection of media studies and the sociology of sport, with a primary focus on the postcolonial representation, gender framing, and commercialization of female athletes in India. Utilizing a robust longitudinal content analysis that categorizes historical media data into three distinct sections, his work maps the structural transformation of women's sports from tradition to modernity.

In tandem with his work on gender and media, Dr. Halder is a leading voice in the study of South Asian combat cultures. His research investigates the martial, embodied, and medicinal epistemologies of traditional physical cultures, specifically Kalaripayattu (കളരിപ്പയറ്റ്), Kung Fu (功夫) and Wushu (武术). For his paper “Training the Body, Healing the Self: The Martial and Medicinal Epistemology of Kalaripayattu, India's Own Martial Art,” he was honored with the 2026 Terry Todd Award for Best Paper by a Working Scholar (shared with Professor Zheng Guohua) from the H.J. Lutcher Stark Center at the University of Texas at Austin. He earned his Ph.D. from the Shanghai University of Sport, where his doctoral research was supported by the President’s Scholarship.
